Santa Fe, NM - A youth photography contest and exhibit organized by Earth Care International has been added to the roster of cutting-edge community events that will compliment the film screenings of the upcoming Global Green Indigenous Film Festival.

The Image of Hope addresses the environmental challenges we face and the solutions envisioned for our future. Youth ages 12 to 25 were invited to submit an original photo of an environmental problem, an original photo of an environmental solution and an artist statement. The contest is an initiative of Earth Care International, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is “to educate and empower youth to create a thriving, just and sustainable world,” says Bianca Sopoci-Belknap, Earth Care’s Community Education Program Leader. “We work not only to educate young leaders but to take them beyond awareness, into action and creation. This contest engages participants on both an intellectual and creative level, and furthermore offers them the reward of having their efforts acknowledged during a prestigious international event,” said Sopoci-Belknap.

The Image of Hope forms part of the Global Green Indigenous Film Festival that will take place in Santa Fe, NM between April 18 and 20, 2008. The Festival is co-sponsored by the National Tribal Environmental Council (NTEC), the NM Tourism Department and the Jicarilla Apache Nation, in partnership with the National Geographic All Roads Film Project, NM Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Santa Fe, Institute of American Indian Arts and NM Film Museum. Over 30 films from around the globe will be presented, their common theme being that they address the relationship between Indigenous communities and mother earth. The first, second and third place winners of the Image of Hope contest will be announced at the Festival’s opening night reception, and the top 10 entries will be exhibited at the Cinema Café for the duration of the Festival.

The Executive Director of NTEC, Jerry Pardilla, states: “The youth photo contest presented by Earth Care International is a vital part of our endeavors because it allows us to reach out to our young people, with whom the future and sustainability of our planet rests.”
